John – Member Care/Construction Management
For years I’ve said, “If I could do anything, I would build with my hands part time and do counseling and pastoral care for the other half of the time.” Construction has always been an interest of mine. I’m one of those guys who always had a project going or was looking for the next one I could jump into.
In my years as missionary staff with FamilyLife, my role as Manager of Employee Relations developed my skills in matters of conflict resolution, staff development, and other areas of shepherding our staff. I became certified in Human Resources, honed my skills in lay counseling, and discovered my passion for biblical peacemaking and conflict resolution through PeaceMakers Ministries.Over time God began to expand my heart for people who live with a poverty of material resources: for places in the world where there is little competition to provide help and hope. As my wife and I began to look at how to engage in long term development, we saw an opportunity at the intersection of this vision with my interests in construction and pastoral care.
We found EMI East Africa through a Google search! Construction and shepherding in the same position, while applying our gifts in a location of true need? It seemed God-sized, and it certainly has been... The adventure continues!

Verses to Live By
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.
- Psalm 40:1-3 ESV
